Enjoying this Virgo full moon energy of clearing & sweeping away what no longer serves you… It has me thinking on energetic hygiene. Something I’m normally very good at but have gotten a bit lax with lately. Energetic hygiene is a prescription for warding off bad vibes. For me, this looks like daily journaling, eating well, getting outside, staying away from the people who activate your nervous system and don’t want to work on that… simple good mental health habits that really really make a difference.

With the busyness of three children, unschooling, work, running a business and home, it’s tempting to neglect good habits for quick fixes like coffee, chocolate, and Netflix.

I believe childbirth maketh the mother. I believe childbirth and pregnancy both are a rite of passage, they are both intensely transformational: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Equipping you for the challenge or quest that is motherhood.

What would the male equivalent be? I wonder if our modern culture is not missing something after abandoning ancient rites of passage for men such as the Walkabout rite of passage in Australian Aboriginal society and the Ulwaluko rite of passage among the Xhosa here in South Africa. Keen to hear your thoughts.

Things I’m pondering as my son nears adulthood. Last pic is of an all boys wild camping trip he did in December. Not quite a rite of passage but an immensely motivating experience for him.

Parenting with connection and love can be more challenging when our own needs are unmet. Here are my tips on HOW to get your needs met:

1. Identify your needs
Googling the NVC list of needs is very helpful
We need support, to be heard, to be appreciated… as a start

2. Be WILLING to get your needs met
Your children pay the price when your needs are unmet. Put the oxygen mask on yourself first mama ❤️

3. Take action to get your needs met
Quite likely you will need to discover different ways of having your needs met than before having children but this doesn’t mean you need to be a martyr mother. Support and feeling heard may come from voice notes with a listening partner instead of a coffee shop chat with a bestie, be willing to reframe and get creative.

Remember, by prioritizing our own needs, we can respond better to our children’s challenging behaviour, nurturing the connection and love 🩷
